Spring Valley High School was formed in 1998 when three other high schools (Ceredo-Kenova, Buffalo, and Vinson) closed their doors. The band makes up approximately 15% of the total enrollment of 1200 at SVHS.
Spring Valley High School is well noted for it's band's winning tradition. Since the schools inception, The Marching Timberwolves, has won numerous awards at the many competitions it has participated in.
The band has also performed at the Sugar Bowl, Walt Disney World, MGM Studios, and many amusement parks.
The band at SVHS is under the direction of Mr. Tom Chaffin and the assistant director is Mr. Joe Hardin. Mr. Chaffin is beginning his 38th year as a band director with the past nine years being at SVHS. Mr. Chaffin is married to Jeanne who is an active member of the band boosters and she also coordinates the color guard activities. The Chaffin's have two children - Christy Frye who graduated from Wayne High School and George who graduated from SVHS. Both are pursuing musical careers. Christy will complete her doctorate at the University of Texas this year while George is a member of the Glassmen Drum & Bugle Corps.
Mr. Joe Hardin has been a band director for 21 years. He has been at SVHS for the past 5 years as an assistant band director. He also is the band director for Ceredo-Kenova Middle School. Mr. Hardin has taught at various schools throughout West Virginia. |
